Be Grateful You Can Go To The Dentist

If you are like me, then I know you hate going to the dentist. It’s uncomfortable, nerve raking, and seldom boosts your self esteem. Going to the dentist is kind of like being forced to eat vegetables when we were little kids. We hated vegetables, simply because of the fact that they were vegetables.

Going to the dentist is just like eating those vegetables, only slightly more painful. You can always cover vegetables with cheese or ketchup, but the pain in your mouth with dentistry effects your wallet much more than buying a few vegetables. Here in America we have ample access to professional health and dental care. Opportunities are boundless, and most dentists take Medicaid, Medicare, and other insurances to either help or completely pay for our dental care. In Africa and Ghana however, they are not so lucky.

There are simply not enough dentists to meet the needs of the Ghana’s population, especially in the rural areas. Research has shown that about 70% of dentists in Ghana are based in Accra and Kumasi, where the only two dental schools in the country are located. Only the wealthiest people of Ghana can afford to travel that far just to get their yearly check up.
I think we take for granted something that we tend to dread. Imagine our life without access to dental  care. Everyone’s teeth would be disgusting.  They’d be yellow and crooked and half of them would be gone.  Without dental care, our breath would stink horribly and no amount of mouthwash could fix it. People would never go out of their homes, the divorce rate would skyrocket and online dating would be more popular than ever!

Most of us live within an hour, if not minutes from a dentist office. If we don’t know where the closest dentists are to us, all we have to do is spend a few minutes online to find the names and addresses of the top dentists in our area with testimonials from previous clients.

Let’s be grateful for the opportunity to have our teeth straight, clean, white and disease free.
